WICHITA, Kan. -

A local organization aimed at helping needy families during the holidays has developed a new app to make it easier to people to donate.

During a press conference Thursday, Operation Holiday said its goal for 2013 is $350,000 and 200,000 food items. The program distributes nonperishable food, fresh food vouchers, winter wear and blankets to low-income families and individuals. Children under the age of 14 receive gifts through a partnership with the Marines Toys for Tots program.

They said they also hope to help 14,000 families, up about 1,000 from 2012.

The group is also concerned about the short time frame between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But they are hoping a new app will encourage more people to help financially, rather than bringing items to donate.

Operation Holiday begins accepting applications for assistance on Monday.

Items can be donated at the Distribution Center, 6025 E. Kellogg Drive.
