One person is dead following a chase and officer-involved shooting in West Wichita.

Wichita Police say David M. Zehring of Wichita confronted officers with a knife and after approaching officers they took action against him. Officers tased Zehring twice, but they say he would not stop.

Emergency dispatchers tell us it started with a chase around 2:30 a.m at 13th and St. Paul.  That chase ended near Maple and Mt. Carmel.

"We woke up to gunfire. I thought, 'God, it sounded like maybe fireworks.' My husband said, 'No, that's bullets.' So we looked out our bedroom window and just seen cops everywhere," said Tammy Thomas who lives on Mount Carmel St.

"I heard like five (or) six gunshots," said Tania Rodriguez who lives in the neighborhood.

"Which scared me' cause I have a daughter," added Michelle Mejia.

Zehring was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but police tell us he died a short time later.

Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams says he is grateful no officers were hurt.

Investigators were on the scene between Maple and Sheridan most of the morning.

Police used a laser to create a 3D map of the crime scene.  It's new technology they just started using.  It allows them to create a digital version of the scene that can be seen from all angles to get a better understanding of what happened.

Wichita Police, KBI and Sedgewick County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting.
