A man died Monday afternoon after trying to clear debris from K-96, just west of the Rock Road on-ramp.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said Larry Dobbs, of El Dorado, saw some drywall fall from a truck on to the road. He parked his car ahead of it, then got out onto the median and tried to clear it.
Larry Dobbs' family tells us he was a Winfield Police officer from 1975 to 2003, and served as Police Chief for the last seven of those years.
His daughter says he was working as a Probation Officer in Butler County.
Investigators say the driver of a semi tried to avoid other stopped cars, swerved into the median to avoid striking a vehicle and struck Dobbs.
KHP Trooper Gary Warner says while the 61-year-old was trying to be a "Good Samaritan," you should not take matters like these into your own hands.
"If you see debris in the roadway contact 911 they will dispatch appropriate. Authorities will come out and removed debris. Don't take it upon yourself to exit your vehicle into traffic and attempt to remove debris from the roadway."
The trucking company says the driver had 800,000 miles on his truck and is one of its safest drivers.
KHP is still investigating the accident.
