One of two men hurt while trying to retrieve a stolen truck has died. Police say 25-year-old Shawn Palmer died after being run over by a car. His 27-year-old brother was also hurt in the incident, but has since been released from the hospital.
Police say the two brothers saw their dad's truck with a trailer at a QuikTrip Saturday morning. They confronted the driver, who then drove off. When the driver tried to flee in the truck, the brothers jumped on but were thrown off. One was thrown from the truck while it was still in the parking lot, the other held on until they reached Meridian.
The driver was arrested and could face additional charges now that the incident has turned fatal.
According to Sedgwick County jail records, Edward Ladish, 34, was booked into the detention center on aggravated battery and burglary. He is being held on $200,000 bond.
WPD Lt. Randy Reynolds says it's always best to call 911 when you're in a situation like this, but sympathizes with the brothers trying to get their dad's truck back.
Two men were hurt and another man has been arrested during a car theft.
It happened around 8 a.m. Saturday at a QuikTrip near MacArthur and Meridian. Police said two brothers, ages 25 and 27, saw their father's stolen pickup at the convenience store and approached the suspect. The men grabbed onto the truck and were pulled into the street as the suspect drove away.
One was thrown from the vehicle and ran over by an attached flatbed trailer. He was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in critical condition. The other was also treated for minor injuries.
Officers found the truck in a wooded area in the 3000 block of West 34th St. South. The 34-year-old man was taken into custody for aggravated battery and auto theft.
Sgt. Ed Brower said the men should have called 911 when they saw the stolen truck in the parking lot.
"When ever you do try and take the law into your own hands, especially grabbing onto a vehicle, you never now if people are armed," Bower said.
