Wichita, Kan. -

The American Red Cross in Wichita is taking steps to to keep more local residents cool during the hot summer months.

The organization kicked off its annual Fan Giveaway Program Wednesday morning at 8:00. The giveaway will last until 2:30 each afternoon and runs through Friday, June 13. The group was prepared to give away 1,200 fans, but residents were lined up early and organizers say they go fast every year.

"It's a huge need and so people want to get those fans," said Marena Assarsson, Regional Communications Manager for Wichita American Red Cross. "They want to get here quickly and get in and get out before they're all gone. We'll run it to 2:30 on Friday, but it's pretty unlikely that we'll still have fans at 2:30 on Friday."

The Red Cross particularly encourages the elderly or those who may have children to sign up for the program, as those groups of people can be more vulnerable to the heat.

"A lot of the elderly need the air to cool and circulate for them because otherwise they might have a heat stroke or they might become unconscious and nobody would be able to help them," added Michael Loggins who was also in line Wednesday for a fan.

Fans are limited to one per household. To get a fan, you must bring your driver's license (or other state-issued ID) and proof of your current address (a recent utility bill).

The American Red Cross in Wichita is located at 1900 E. Douglas.
