DERBY, Kan. -

Gusty winds made fighting two house fires in Derby difficult for crews Monday.

Dispatch says it happened near North Rock Road in the 1600 block of east Cresthill around 3 p.m.

Nearby residents say they heard what sounded like a lawnmower starting, then saw the smoke and flames in the back yard. Derby fire investigators say they believe that lawnmower is what caused the fire, but it is still under investigation.  They also say both homes are likely a total loss.

It took crews about an hour to get the fires under control. One person suffered minor injuries in the fire, but is expected to be okay.
