WICHITA, Kan. -

The latest phone scam was brought to our attention by the Sedgwick County District Office, which actually received a call from the scammers.

It works like this ...

A call comes from a 202 number, originated from the Washington State area.

The scammers say you're entitled to $9,000 because you've never filed for bankruptcy. Then they want you to call a number so you can "collect your reward" from the federal government.

"Anybody who's bold enough to call the consumer fraud department of the office of the district attorney to scam us," District Attorney Marc Bennett said, "probably ought to be on the citizens' radar as somebody they need to try to avoid."

This scam is linked to other scams, Bennett said, including child protective services and an IRS hotline.
