June has been proclaimed lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride month in Salina.
A standing-room crowd applauded after Mayor Aaron Householter signed the proclamation Monday, according to the Salina Journal.
Gary Martens, chairman of the North Central Kansas Equality Chapter, said the anti-LGBT movement in 2012 energized his organization. Salina commissioners approved an anti-discrimination ordinance that included the LGBT community, but voters struck it down.
"Because of them we now have a large and very energized group with a membership that has never been so active," he said during Monday's meeting.
No one spoke against proclamation.
The last line of the proclamation reads,"I urge every citizen of Salina to join me in celebrating the diversity and character of our community and highlight the importance of LGBT citizens in making this city a safer and more welcoming community for everyone."
