It was a tiger-themed birthday unlike any other at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

A cake, full of meat, didn't stand a chance as tiger cubs Natasha and Tsar celebrated their first birthday.

"It was mostly blood," said Jody Sentel, zookeeper. "It had a beef heart and fish in it also and different meaty treats for them."

The Amur Tigers have marked many milestones in their first year, and grown substantially.

"When they were first born, you could hold them in your hands, " Sentel said. "Now, when they're on their back feet, they stand taller than I am."

The cubs held a birthday bash for guests, including the Heim family, who also celebrates this day. Their son, Jed, was born an hour after the cubs July 6, 2013.

The Heim's said they plan to make the date an annual event for their family.
