BEL AIRE, Kan. -

Sedgwick County authorities are investigating a baby's death inside a Bel Aire home.

Sheriff Jeff Easter, Sedgwick County, said the three-month-old girl died early Friday morning. The baby was sleeping with her mother on a couch in the basement of the home. Easter said the mother rolled on top of the baby, suffocating her.

The baby was not breathing when emergency crews arrived. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Easter said the 18-year-old mother was staying in the home with the family. Although the home is a licensed foster home, the state said the baby was not in foster care.

The Department of Children and Families has also opened an investigation.

There have been no charges filed in the case, and Easter said he will wait for autopsy results before turning the case over to Marc Bennett's office to make a decision on any charges.
