LINCOLN/SALINE COUNTY, Kan. -

Authorities have reopened a portion of I-70 in Saline County due to visibility issues from thick smoke.

Several firefighters were called to assist with grass fires that sparked near railroad tracks at the Saline and Lincoln County line around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Saline County authorities said their units were sent to battle a blaze near west Watkins Rd. and north Mcgavern Rd. Firefighters from Ellsworth County were also called to assist with traffic control.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports troopers were on the scene to investigate a couple of accidents in the area. Five vehicles were involved, sending two drivers to a nearby hospital with injuries.

Authorities closed both lanes of traffic from Lincoln County into Saline County for a couple of hours to clear the accidents, and let smoke clear the area.

The cause of the fires remains under investigation.
