WICHITA, Kan. -

There's an urgent need for blood and platelet donors at the American Red Cross.

A spokeswoman said 300 blood drives across 25 states were cancelled across the U.S. due to snow and extreme cold. The blood drive cancellations resulted in a shortfall of nearly 8,800 blood and platelet donations since January 2.

Platelet donors, as well as blood donors with the most in demand blood types are O positive and negative, A negative and B negative, are urgently needed to offset the shortfall. Platelets are key clotting component of blood needed for cancer patients.

In addition to regular hour of operation, the Red Cross Blood Center, located at 707 North Main in Wichita, has extended its hours for donors. To make appointments or for more information call 1-800-733-2767.
