WICHITA, Kan. -

A sinkhole that closed part of a road into Towne West Mall Saturday has been fixed. It happened near Tracy Street.

Wichita Public Works and Utilities Assistant Director Don Henry says a leak in a storm sewer pipe caused an eight foot by eight foot section of ground to be washed away under the pavement.

"Over time as rain water leaked out of the pipe it eroded the ground beneath the street and eventually it fell in there," Henry added.

The City of Wichita inspects sewer pipes on a regular basis to avoid issues like this.

A crew filled the hole Monday and put on a temporary pavement fix. Contractors will make a permanent repair to the area in about 30 to 60 days.

Traffic into the mall at Tracy Street has reopened.
