WICHITA, Kan. -

Wichita Police are asking neighbors to be on alert, after a string of mailbox thefts.

Lt. Joe Schroeder, Wichita Police, said the thefts happened in the extreme northern and eastern parts over the city over the past couple of days. The thieves are breaking into locked mailboxes to gain access.

Schoeder said the thieves are looking for checks or other personal information that could be used to steal a victim's identity.

"It is a crime to tamper with a mailbox," Schroeder said.

Anyone who notices suspicious activity in their neighborhoods should call 911. Schroeder said you may never know what tips could lead to clearing other crimes.
