Not long after finding out Rep. Mike Pompeo won the race for the U.S. House District 4 republican candidacy, Todd Tiahrt spoke to his supporters.

The former congressman said he was proud of their campaign and how they stuck to their principles - even if it wasn't enough.

"Not long ago we felt like the right thing to do was to make the voice of the people heard for the 4th District of Kansas," said Tiahrt. "And we asked the people of Kansas to stand with us and a lot of them did."

That has been Tiahrt's message from the beginning, and it was one his supporters were able to get behind.

"We feel like Todd would do that, he would go back to Washington and really take our concerns back," said one supporter.

"It's because of his principles and his integrity and he gives the people a platform to be heard."

Many said they thought Tiahrt's 16 years representing the 4th district showed he was in tune to the community.

"From what I've seen I think his track record proves that he should be there again."

But in the end, it wasn't enough.

"As you know, we're not going to win this race tonight. But we have won a lot of hearts. And engaged a lot of people in the political process," said Tiahrt.

He reached a lot of people and shared the message of hope. A message he hopes will now resonate in Washington, D.C.
