WICHITA, Kan. -

Wichita police have identified a 3-year-old girl who died last night from suspected abuse as Emma Krueger.

The girl's 24-year-old mother and her 23-year-old boyfriend now face Felony Murder charges. Both were booked early Tuesday on child abuse and child endangerment charges.

WPD Homicide Detective Lt. Todd Ojile says Emma was brought to the hospital Monday evening and was in "grave" condition with bruises all over her body. The hospital contacted police to investigate possible abuse.

Officers spoke with the girl's mother and her boyfriend, who were at the hospital with Emma. Both were then booked into jail.

Emma died Wednesday evening, just 30 minutes after a vigil in her honor.

Police say the two lived in the home with the girl for about three months, but they believe the abuse had been going on for the past month.

Lt. Ojile would not comment on the injuries the girl suffered. Police would also not comment on whether mom was involved in the alleged abuse.

Police are expected to present their case to the District Attorney for formal charges Friday afternoon or Monday at the latest. This is the 10th homicide in Wichita of 2014.

Police say the two do not have any criminal history and there is no history of calls in reference to the home.

Child abuse in Kansas

In 2011, the most recent year numbers are available, half of those who died in Kansas were killed by the mother's boyfriend who was left alone to care for the child.
