WICHITA, Kan. -

A mother and two children escaped a southwest Wichita duplex fire with minor cuts Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 8 a.m. in the 1800 block of W. Dora.

Battalion Chief Ernie Schuler said the family was sleep when fire started.

The mother smelled smoke, opened the bedroom door and saw flames from a ceiling fan. She shut the door and broke out window to help family escape.

Chief Schuler said crews saw smoke and flames coming from the duplex when they arrived. They were able to put the fire out quickly.

A dog inside had to be given oxygen but is expected to be okay.

The family refused medical treatment. Damage to the duplex was estimated at $25,000. The cause of the fire is unknown.
