WICHITA, Kan. -

It's been just over five weeks since 3-year-old Emma Krueger passed away after police say they expect she was abused for more than a month. But even though many weeks have passed, one local organization is making sure the community of Wichita doesn't forget Emma's story or the need to raise awareness about child abuse.

Saturday, ICT Rec Sports hosted an all day softball tournament in honor of Emma Krueger. Eighteen teams signed up to play and spent the day sporting blue shirts, blue ribbons, or homemade shirts bearing Emma's name.

"A close friend of mine brought it to my attention and after reading some about it, we decided to do something about it," said Damien Sandoval with ICT Rec Sports. "We wanted to send a message that we're not going to do this anymore."

Just with team entry fees the group raised about $2,500 dollars that will be donated to local charities. The money will be split between the Junior League of Wichita, a group active in child abuse awareness and prevention, and BACA or Bikers Against Child Abuse

Even though the benefit was set up in honor of young Emma, organizers and even many of Emma's family members who were at the tournament Saturday said they know this cause is about so much more than just her story.

"The conclusion that we've drawn is that this was Emma's purpose in life," said Tiffany Rufe, Emma's aunt. "Everybody has a purpose, this was her purpose to save other people hopefully."

Rufe said even though it's been five weeks since Emma passed away, she hopes people don't let her story fade into the background. She hopes events like Saturdays continue to remind people about the issue of child abuse and what we can do to help stop it.

"It was just a huge shock," said Rufe. "So, if this can happen to Emma, it can happen to anyone."

"Don't be afraid to go to family or close friends," added another family member, Fonda Lowe. "Do what you can to keep it from happening."

Emma's mother, Monica Krueger, and the mother's boyfriend were both charged with first degree murder after Emma's death.
