WICHITA, Kan. -

A north Wichita restaurant sustains extensive damage after an early-morning fire.

Crews were called to Sweet Basil Italian Restaurant near 21st & Woodlawn at around 4:15 Wednesday morning.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area, but the cause remains under investigation.

We spoke with the owner of the restaurant. He says he plans to rebuild.

Fire officials tell us the business suffered extensive smoke and heat damage throughout, and the business will likely be closed for a while.

"Hopefully it will be back. The owners are wonderful, all the wait staff, they're just fantastic people.  And I hate to see this happen but hopefully it will come out and they'll rise again," said Don Landis.

Some smoke did spread into an adjacent business, but damage there is minimal.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire. No one was hurt. Investigators say damage to the business is estimated around $400,000.
