A Wichita woman is arrested in Texas after authorities say they found more than a pound of methamphetamine strapped to her mid-section.
Officers with the US Customs and Border Protection Office in El Paso say 33-year-old Melissa Kay Villar of Wichita was trying to cross the border at around 5:00 pm on New Year's Day.
While being interviewed, an inspection officer noticed an unusual bulge coming from her lower back area. They checked and found two bundles of methamphetamine strapped to her back. The drugs weighed 1.15 pounds.
Villar was arrested and turned over to the US Immigration and Customers Enforcement Agency for charges.
“History has shown that smugglers don’t take holidays off and neither do we,” said CBP El Paso Port Director Hector Mancha. “CBP officers remain vigilant 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to stop all forms of illegal activity at border ports.”
This was the first seizure made at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in El Paso for 2014.
