WICHITA, Kan. -

A woman is at a Wichita hospital after rolling her car near Maize Saturday morning.

Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers say an off-duty Mount Hope police officer was following the car as it drove erratically on K-96.  The officer said the driver reached speeds of 100 mph at one time and was crossing over the line.

The driver, a 40-year-old female from Wichita, then turned onto north Ridge road. The officer said she was going about 60 mph when she crossed the center line, hit a culvert,  and rolled her car. This happened between 53rd and 61st street on Ridge.

A woman who was two cars behind the red car saw the accident and says the cars engine then caught fire.

"The gentleman in the truck in front of me had a fire extinguisher, but then it ran out," said Chris Ketzner, an eyewitness. "About a minute later the fire officers put out the fire and they were getting out the jaws of life. The rescue squad got here really quickly, like in a few minutes."

Emergency crews were able to pry the woman out and rushed her by ambulance to a Wichita hospital.  Troopers said she was in critical condition.

Troopers are investigating whether prescription drugs played a factor in the crash.
