WICHITA, Kan. -

Wichita police received an award from PETA for saving a dog trapped on a highway ledge on the Fourth of July.

Police say Harley, a German Shepherd, was spooked by fireworks, jumped his family's fence and ran away. He ended up trapped on 32-foot ledge on Kellogg, over Tyler Road.

When police saw Harley, they shut down traffic until they were able to rescue him.

He stayed with an officer for the night but was reunited with his family after the police department shared the photo of the rescue on their Facebook page.

For saving Harley and reuniting him with his family, the Wichita Police Department will receive PETA's Compassionate Action Award, a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation, and an assortment of vegan cookies.
