Mubarak's reign

Egypt's Hosni Mubarak resigned as president February 11, 2011, and handed control to the military after 29 years in power, bowing to an historic 18-day wave of pro-democracy demonstrations by hundreds of thousands. "The people ousted the president," chanted a crowd of tens of thousands outside his presidential palace in Cairo. Mubarak was charged, tried and convicted June 2, 2012 and sentenced to life in prison for ordering the killing of demonstrators during the Egyptian uprising in 2011.
