A few Wichita families will be able to buy a couple of extra Christmas gifts this holiday season. They'll split one of the six Powerball tickets that won $10,000 this week.
37 employees at Wichita's Morris Laing Law Offices decided it was time to try their luck Wednesday afternoon. They pitched in $2 each and dreamed of winning big, understanding the chances were slim. Little did they know they'll be winners.
"It was fun and it gave us something to about the next day," says Jeremy Harris.
Harris was the one watching the lottery pick the winning numbers on TV. He knew checking 37 tickets wasn't going to be easy so we just looked for tickets that matched the power ball. He found two. One of them matched four other numbers.
"I never really played before but I'm like, it seems like you should win something," he said. He was right and then he had to do the calculations. How much does $10,000 translate to?
"First, there's 30% that goes to taxes," he says. "So that's $7,000 and then it's $7,000 divided by 37 so I think we all get about $189 each. You know that's not a lot of money but it's a two dollar investment, the best two dollar investment I ever made."
Now all 37 employees have to fill out some forms and wait. They hope to have the money within a couple of weeks.
Harris can't help but think what could have happened if that ticket simply matched one more number.
"There's certainly joy for winning $10,000 but also a little bit of bitterness," he says. "Because one more number and you'd be talking to a millionnaire right now."
