(WICHITA, Kan.)—
Jay Johnson dropped a friend off at the airport for an early Sunday morning flight, but as he returned home he saw an orange glow coming from his street. That glow came from a house in the 12800 block of East Bellechase Court.Johnson called 911 a little after 5 a.m. Sunday and a short time later fire trucks arrived. Seven trucks responded after hearing reports that a man was trapped inside, but they arrived to find the man had made it out without injury. "It's like I can't believe this. Is this really happening and really what do I do? Do I run into the house right now? Do I make the phone call? So, I just took 30 seconds to gather my thoughts, look around and get founded in the situation and I didn't have to do anything," said Johnson.
Police say the man's daughter stayed at a friends house overnight. Police say he was the only person home when the fire started. Fire officials do not have a damage estimate yet. They continue to investigate what started the blaze.
