A slow economy usually means a slow-down for construction, but in one Kansas County contractors have been busy.
"2012 is shaping to be a really good year in the salina economy," said Dennis Lauver, president and CEO of the Salina Chamber of Commerce. " The indudustrial and business permits that have been issued in 2012 are substantially ahead of where they were in 2011."
In just the first six months of 2012, 70 industrial and commercial building permits have been filed in Saline County. Some projects in Salina include a Dillons, an Olive Garden and additions to Great Plains Manufacturing.
"In fact this will be one of the better years for development in the last five years in the Salina economy," said Lauver.
Salina Chamber of Commerce members believe it was teamwork that laid down the foundation for the increase in construction.
"We work really hard on partnership between the Salina Airport Authority, the chamber of commerce, the city and Saline County and I think what we are seeing is a reflection of partnership," said Lauver.
All of the construuction is not only good for the city and county--it's good for the citizens, as well.
"I feel like we are growing," said Salina citizen Sarah Caudill. "It's good to know that we are using our time wisely and not just using it on random stuff. It looks good. It makes the city look good and I feel good about it."
Business owners agree. Jason Maas owns a local paint company that does commercial work and he says he doesn't see the boom slowing down anytime soon.
"We've probably got a million dollars of work right now," said Maas. "I get two bids a week."
"Everytime the cash register rings in Salina, Kan it means the more money there is for quality life improvements," said Lauver.
Leaving residents hopeful for the future of Salina.
