A standoff in the town of downs comes to an end. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team stormed a home just before 8pm this evening. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers. The suspect was shot.
Authorities tell Eyewitness News that they attempted to negotiate with the 20-year-old man several times to no avail.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries are not known at this time. No one else was hurt in the exchange.
It began shortly before 11am on Monday officers were trying to locate a 20-year-old man from Downs for an incident that occurred at the Jewell County Courthouse.
The suspect was found by a Mitchell County Deputy traveling westbound on US-24. A chase then ensued. The suspect led police to his home at 814 Division in Downs. He has barricaded himself inside the home. He has fired shots at officers in the area.
Currently the Kansas Highway Patrol's Special Response Team is at the scene. They have opened a line of communication with the suspect although that has been spotty.
So far three shots have been fired. No one was hit but two patrol cars were damaged by gunfire.
