A couple charged in the death of a Salina toddler appear in court. 19-year-old Brittney Betzold and her boyfriend 27-year-old Antonio Brown were in court for a preliminary hearing. They are charged with first-degree-murder in last year's death of Betzold's 14-month old son Clayden Urbanek.
The judge spent much of the day hearing about Clayden's injuries. Trauma manager Rachelle Giroux works at Salina Regional Medical Hospital. She says Clayden was in grave condition when he was brought in by paramedics in October of 2011.
She testified that hospital staff questioned Betzold about her son's injuries. She told them Clayden had a previous foot injury which made him unstable. "That he had an injury I believe to his right foot and it was wrapped and that was causing him to fall a lot," Giroux testified.
Authorities also testified about the boy's living conditions. Salina police showed his Salina home had no food and no power. They stated the family was using an extension cord, plugged into a neighboring church for electricity.
The hearing didn't end Wednesday, testimony will continue in July. That's when the judge will decide whether there's enough evidence to send Betzold and Brown to trial.
