Brittney N. Betzold pled guilty Thursday in Saline County District Court to abusing and murdering her 14-month-old son.
According to our news partners at The Salina Journal, Betzold entered guilty pleas to amended charges of second-degree murder and child abuse in connection. Her son, Clayden Lee Urbanek, died on Oct. 4, 2011. Authorities said the toddler was covered with bruises when he died
As a part of a lea deal, Betzold will serve the sentences one after the other. She'll be sentenced Jan. 4 and faces up to 52 years in prison.
Betzold was scheduled to stand trial Dec. 10 on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated endangerment of a child, abuse of a child and interference with a law enforcement officer.
Betzold's fiance, 28-year-old Antonio M. Brown, is scheduled for trial in January on a charge of first-degree murder. Police say Brown told officers he had spanked Clayden with a 10-inch piece of board but did not cause the bruising over most of the boy's body or the fatal injuries to his abdomen.
