Adams earns 100th win as Shocks beat Governors

 Wichita State women’s basketball head coach Jody Adams got her 100th win at Wichita State, as the Shockers defeated the Austin Peay Governors, 86-64, in the first of two games in the Winter Classic at Charles Koch Arena Saturday.

Michaela Dapprich led all Shockers with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Alex Harden contributed 15 points and Jamillah Bonner added 13 in the victory.

Wichita State jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the early going after five quick points from Jamillah Bonner and a jumper from Jaleesa Chapel. Austin Peay went on a 6-2 run, cutting the Shocker lead, 17-11 with 13:34 left in the half.

Michaela Dapprich hit back-to-back shots to cap a 13-3 run and extend the Wichita State lead, 30-14. The Governors came back, 35-24, but the Shockers went on a 9-4 run to end the half, 44-28.

The Shockers shot 60 percent (17-for-28) from the field and 43 percent (3-for-7) from behind the arc, while holding the Governors to 41 percent (12-for-29) from the field and forcing 14 turnovers in the first half.

Dapprich hit a three to begin the first half and gave the Shockers a 47-28 advantage. Wichita State held Austin Peay without a field goal for four minutes and back-to-back layups from Harden extended the Shocker lead, 67-48.

The Governors returned the favor and held Wichita State without a field goal for five minutes until Briana Jones made a layup at the 3:15 mark to put the Shockers ahead, 79-59.

Wichita State finished the game on a 7-3 run and defeated Austin Peay, 86-64. The Shockers shot 56 percent (32-for-57) from the field and 46 percent (6-for-13) from three-point range. The Governors were held to 38 percent (24-for-63) from the field and 36 percent (4-for-11) from behind the arc. The bench was a big factor for the Shockers, outscoring Austin Peay, 26-7, in the victory.

The Shockers take on Texas-Pan American Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the final game of the Wichita State Winter Classic.
