Wichita-Trinity is the epitome of a team that's better than their record appears.
The Knights had losses to some of the best teams in the state; Garden City, Scott City, Wichita-Independent and Holcomb and two of them coming by double digits.
They proved that Friday night, outlasting Cheney 84-73.
Cheney (8-2) suffered only their second loss of the season and had a 37-36 lead at halftime. Trinity (6-4) outscored the Cardinals 47-37 in the second half.
The game was back and forth all during the first half, neither team ever able to separate away from a two possession game. Case in point, Trinity's Ryan Miller made a great play driving to the basket for a layup, only to turn around and see Cheney's Cameron Hill knock down a jumper on the other end.
The craziness hit a fever pitch with a minute left when both teams traded baskets before Gabe Shomacker hit a fade away jumper to gain a one point lead.
Both teams came out in a frenzy in the second, highlighted by Trinity's Matt Jones back to back triples to give Trinity a six point lead. But Cheney would never back down, working the ball inside to Schomacker, who for his size is very agile underneath the basket. He finished the night with 22 points, leading all teams in scoring.
Cameron Hill was Cheney's answer on the outside, hitting shots from the wing and keeping Cheney in a four point game then. He was a factor and was missed when he fouled out with two and a half minutes left.
Trinity finally began to gain a bit of a lead before Tyler Burns knocked down a three-pointer to ice the game. Burns finished with 16 points, Ryan Miller had 15 as did Jones in a balanced scoring effort.
Cheney heads to the Halstead Tournament next week while Trinity heads to the El Dorado tourney.

Led by Caroline Zielke and Shiloh Miller, Wichita-Trinity girls outpaced Cheney, 53-36 Friday night.
Zielke and Miller combined for 20 points and the Lady Knights held Cheney to 12 second half points. Cheney scored on three points in the fourth and final quarter.
The girls take a week off before the Berean Academy tournament.
