WSU Women beat UTSA, 50-36, improve to 2-1

Alex Harden's 18 points led Wichita State to a 50-36 non-conference victory over UTSA Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

Harden, a sophomore from Springfield, Ill. was the only Shocker in double figures going 8-for-10 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

Wichita State (2-1) outscored UTSA (3-1), 29-11, in the first half holding the Roadrunners to 13% shooting. WSU held the rebounding edge, 26-15. The Shockers started the game on an 8-1 run culminating with Michelle Price's layup with 12:57 remaining. Sophomore Alex Harden led Wichita State with 10 points and four rebounds in the half.

UTSA started the second half on a 14-3 run to get within seven, 32-25, on Akunna Elonu's layup with 14:19 remaining in the game. A pair of free throws by Jazimen Gordon and a layup by Harden pushed the Shocker lead back to double digits.

Two free throws from Simone Young completed a 7-2 run for the Roadrunners that cut the Shocker lead to six, 38-32, with 8:55 remaining. Wichita State responded with a 7-0 run of their own getting five points from the free throw line to again extend their lead to double figures.

The Shockers closed the game on a ­­12-4 run to put away UTSA.

Wichita State will next be in action in Cancun, Mexico as they play three games in the Cancun Challenge beginning Thur., Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. (CST).
