Bill Self is officially a hall-of-famer, in Oklahoma. It was announced on Tuesday that the Kansas men's basketball coach will be one of seven people inducted in the 2013 class of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been inducted into anything like that. It’s a great honor,” Self said. “I’m really proud of my state and respect all the people in different sports and different areas that have contributed to the rich sports history of Oklahoma.”
Bill Self went to high school in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was named his home state's High School Basketball Player of the Year in 1981. Self played collegiately at Oklahoma State University from 1982-85.
Self started as a graduate assistant at Kansas under Larry Brown before returning as an assistant at OSU. Self was the head coach at Oral Roberts from 1993-97 moving on to Tulsa in the 1997-98 season. The Elite Eight appearance by the Golden Hurricane in 2000 helped earn Self the head coaching job at Illinois which he held before he arrived at Kansas in 2003
The induction ceremony will occur on August 5th 2013 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
