– Jasmine Jones scored a career-high 11 points but the Wichita State women’s basketball dropped a 61-59 decision at Creighton Thursday night. The Bluejays out-rebounded WSU 47-22 and held the Shockers to 10 points over the final 12 minutes.Jones added four steals to her career-high scoring output. Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers (14-7, 8-2 MVC) with 16 points and five steals as WSU forced 21 turnovers. Jazimen Gordon contributed 13 points and a team-high four rebounds.
Creighton (12-9, 6-4 MVC) dominated the backboards and delivered on 19-of-24 free throws (79.2%) to hold off the Shocks. Sophomore guard Carli Tritz put in 15 points with the help of 7-for-7 free throw shooting. Freshman Taylor Johnson netted the decisive free throws for the Bluejays and ended with 12 points. Creighton has now beaten the Shockers 11 consecutive times in Omaha.
In a wild first half, WSU fell behind 4-0 before going on a 16-2 run to claim a 10-point lead at the 12:53 mark. Creighton quickly rallied, out-scoring the Shockers 18-4 over the next seven minutes. A pair of Tritz free throws with 1.2 seconds left gave the Bluejays a 30-29 lead heading into halftime. Nineteen of the 29 WSU points in the first half came off 12 Creighton turnovers, though the Bluejays out-rebounded WSU 23-9.
Next up for the Shockers is a 2:05 p.m. Saturday tip-off at Drake.
