The Wichita State University women’s basketball team led most of the second half but fell a basket short in a 72-70 defeat at LSU to open the 2012-13 season. Four Shockers scored in double figures.
Wichita State held a lead as late as 61-60 with 3:34 remaining and led by as many as six points on several occasions in the second half. A Jessica Diamond jumper pulled WSU within 67-65 with 1:28 to go but four straight LSU free throws helped knock out the Shockers.
Diamond and Michelle Price led WSU with 13 points each. Jazimen Gordon added 12 and Alex Harden chipped in with 10 in a balanced scoring effort.
LSU scored the first eight points of the game until a Diamond teardrop put WSU on the board at the 15:58 mark. The Shockers battled a 4-6 point deficit most of the first half but a Diamond three with time expiring pulled WSU within 35-34 at the break.
Chynna Turner put Wichita State on top for the first time with a baseline jumper early in the second half. The lead swelled to six following a Harden jumper in the lane with 13:36 to go. A Gordon jumper at the 8:37 mark matched the six-point advantage before LSU began to chip away.
Bianca Lutley led the Tigers with 19 points. Adrienne Webb added 17 and Theresa Plaisance pulled in 15 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end.
The Shockers shot 48.1% from the floor and connected on 16-of-21 from the free throw line (2-for-2 in the second half). LSU had the slight edge on the boards, 35-33.
