WICHITA, Kan. -

Friends Head Football Coach Monty Lewis wasn't shy about his expectations for the 2014 football season today at the KCAC football media day in Old Town Wichita.

“Frankly, we need to end the championship drought at Friends University. We know what it’s like to go on dominant runs at times. We’ve had our drought. We’ve cycled down and are cycling back up. We’re inviting a chance to really challenge for a championship.”

Friends finished a very respectable 8-3 in 2013 and ranked #17 in the final Coaches poll. Lewis says it was a necessary year to get the program back on track.

“The 8-3 year was needed. I’d like to tell you I thought we could go from the 6-4 years to 11-0, we’d have taken it, but we are not going to make that jump. We needed a year to build that type of record, and it happened for us in 2013. We have to stay focused and keep that willingness.”

Friends will take a power style on offense according to Lewis. Relying on a heavy running attack to help feature the traditional strength of the Falcons, the defense. But even more than the specifics on X's & O's, Lewis is excited about what he has coming back from last year's team.

“We have 8 starters returning on both sides. Experience trumps talent every time. You need the talent, but having experienced guys back means a great deal.”

Friends opens the season at Doane College  on September 6th.
