The Wichita State softball team fell 10-1 to the Kansas Jayhawks in a midweek matchup, Wednesday night at Wilkins Stadium.
Ashley Johnson went 2-for-3 on the day that included a double, while Melanie Jaegers hit 1-for-3, including a double and added five putouts on the night.
Kansas came out to an early 5-0 lead on a single through the left side and three Wichita State errors in the first inning. The Jayhawks added two more runs in the second, hitting back-to-back doubles to right field to give Kansas the 7-0 advantage.
Jaegers hit a double to left field to put Wichita State in scoring position, advancing to third on an Ali Vandever single and scoring on a Johnson single to third base, cutting the Kansas lead, 7-1 in the fifth.
The Jayhawks started the seventh with a double to left field before hitting two-straight singles to score one and a single shortly after to add two more and give Kansas the 10-1 lead.
Wichita State couldn’t respond in its half of the inning and the Shockers fell to 20-14 on the season as the Jayhawks rose to 24-10.
Wichita State is next in action when it travels to Evansville, Ind., for a MVC series with the Evansville Purple Aces April 5-6. The Shockers will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
