Golf has been described as a sickness, that once you catch, you can not shake. And even if you do once, it will come back eventually.
Fortune smiled on Wichita Wednesday with sunny skies and a decent enough temperature for a day on the links. Turned out to be a tad bit windier than expected, making it feel quite a bit colder outside but Jeffrey Parson and I are stupid enough not to care, so we got our first round of the season in like champs.
Tex Consolver was our proving ground for the day, the longest of the Wichita Municipal Golf Courses and when the wind blows, it's even longer.
Normally, we might have waited for the weekend but seeing as that it was Customer Appreciation Day, we couldn't resist. For the month of March, the Wichita Muni courses are holding five dollar days on specific days - here is their website, the dates are listed on the front page. http://www.golfwichita.com/
I think this is a great idea but this needs to happen more than once a month for only that month. Make it every month and more than one day. The courses are hurting for play and want to attract more golfers: Bingo, problem solved, simply by offering a deal. And to the golfers who play regularly, it's a bonus that keeps us from running away out of the city. And it was dollar hot dogs, too. They went like gangbusters.
Back to the golf. Tex is a hard course. It really is. Even though the rough was down because of the early season, it still played hard. The greens are full of bulges and pin placements are always around them. Kudos to the superintendent staff for challenging us in March. When the rough is built up, ball placement in the fariway is key.
Jeffrey knows my game and I know his. Jeffrey isn't as long as I am off the tee but he makes up for it on the greens. When we both walk off the hole with a bogey, we know why. But Jeffrey went out and got him a sweet new driver and I'm currently dating putters, hoping for a long term commitment. Bring your big stick and flat one to Tex.
Tex has the most water on it of all the Wichita Muni's and it's fun to play over water when many courses around Wichita, save for Pine Bay, don't have a ton.
I'm a sucker for Muni courses; the snack bar, the putting greens, the starter box that is no longer in use - it's all great about a different time in golf.
The wind kicked our tails on a handful of holes; 5, 7 and 9 on the front, a bunch more on the back but it still played well, even in March.
If you are out west and don't feel like being completely torn to shreds by Auburn Hills, go back to Tex, especially when it's only five bucks!
