Kansas State comes up short against Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York after a controversial penalty call at the end of the game.
Trailing by eight with about three minutes to go, Kansas State had one more chance to take the ball down the field. Carson Coffman completed a 30 yard pass for a touchdown to Adrian Hilburn. After the touchdown Hilburn was flagged for an excessive celebration penalty, forcing them to attempt a 2-point conversion from the 18 yard line. Coffman threw an incomplete pass on the play and could not recover an onside kick on the kickoff.
K-State trailed by five points with around five minutes to play when they tried a fake field goal from the Syracuse 11 yard line. The Orange made the stop and ended up kicking a field goal on their following drive, making the score 36 to 28.
It was a back and forth battle in the third and fourth quarters. Syracuse struck first in the third quarter with a seven yard run from Delone Carter finishing off a seven play, 60 yard drive. Kansas State countered with a 10 yard pass from Carson Coffman to Chris Harper.
Syracuse scored another touchdown with just over two-minutes to go in the third quarter but missed the extra point making the score 21-27 Syracuse.
Kansas took the lead in the fourth quarter after a one yard touchdown run from Daniel Thomas before Syracuse scored again to take the lead for good in the fourth quarter.
Kansas State was tied with Syracuse at the half. The Wildcats struck first, scoring on the second offensive play of the game. Playing in a baseball stadium, Daniel Thomas hit a homerun with a 51-yard touchdown run. The extra point by Josh Cherry gave KSU the early 7-0 lead.
Syracuse came back with a trick play to even the score. The K-State defense was not able to defend a flea-flicker, and the Orange scored from 52 yards out.
Kansas State had a chance to take the lead in the second quarter, but the Cherry field goal from 38 yards missed, wide to the left.
Taking advantage of the good field position of the missed FG, the Orange took a 14-7 lead on a Ryan Nassib to Marcus Sales 36-yard touchdown pass.
Late in the second quarter, the Wildcats evened the score. Using a 7-play, 73-yard drive, the 'Cats tied it up at 14-14 on a Daniel Thomas 10-yard run.
