Wichita Heights & Maize are no strangers to success.
Heights is the two-time defending state champions, while Maize won the third-place game last year.
Meeting in the finals of the Lady Thunderbird Classic at Shawnee Heights was not a surprise for these two highly successful programs, but who would come out with the title of tournament champion?
After four tough quarters of play it was Maize who was able to continue the season with just one loss after they defeats Wichita Heights 52-44.
"I am very, very proud," Maize head coach Jerrod Handy said. "They showed a lot of toughness."
The game was back and forth for most of the first half. However, the Falcons outscored the Eagles 15-10 to pull away in the third.
Maize wouldn't let go easily. The Eagles went off in the fourth quarter for 19 points, holding Wichita Heights to just four.
A key three pointer by Paige Lungwitz would give Maize the lead and they would not look back.
"That was big," Handy said. "Paige is a great three point shooter, so that was huge."
Maize improves to 11-1, while Heights falls to 9-3. Heights travels to Bishop Carroll on Tuesday, while Maize faces a tough Newton team in Newton
