In a match that harkens back to the Cold War, USA and Russia battled back and forth in a FIVB World League Volleyball match, with the Americans coming out on top.

USA swept the Russians; 25-21, 27-25, 25-23 to take the first match of a two match series at Koch Arena in Wichita. USA needs to win Saturday's match at least 3-1 to advance to the World League final in Argentina.

That match is set for a 6 p.m. start.

The win improves the Americans to 8-3 in pool play and Russia drops to 9-2.

The Russians were outblocked 8-5 and USA's Reid Priddy led all scorers with 15 points, three kills and an ace. 2008 Olympic gold medalist Clay Stanley and Russell Holmes scored 12 for USA.
