It's about this time of year that I get the Brady Bunch stuck in my head. It's an awful ear bug to have when you are sitting at the usually straight laced "State of NASCAR" address. And even through I am not in Charlotte for this years tour...I still heard the crackling of Peter Brady's "shanananana!" Wednesday.
This year I watched on line as NASCAR Chairman Brian France announced this years round of changes. They include a change in the points system that is kinda like the NFL saying touchdowns are now worth 5 point instead of 6 because the math is easier.
"This is a goal for the -- the most important reason is simplicity," France told a room full of media at the NASCAR Hall of Fame Wednesday. "And this allows us a way to communicate the standings in all motorsports, has complicated formulas to add up to tracking someone's -- the standings. This is a very, I think, straightforward way to do that."
Straight forward sure, easier check. But honestly how many NASCAR fans were up at night figuring out the formula for Jimmie Johnson to catch Denny Hamlin at Homestead. The teams know what they have to do, and any fan with a scanner, tv or radio knew to.
Was the old point season perfect, no. But it was, is another disappearing piece of NASCAR tradition, and those disappearing pieces is what has real NASCAR fans upset. A touchdown is 6 points, a basket is 2, a run in baseball is one and a win in NASCAR is 190 or 195, depending on the bonus points.
Tweaking the chase, I get, I guess. Even though we are coming of a pretty darn exciting race for the Sprint Cup. Making drivers pick a series, I'm down. Derek Jeter does get to play in the majors and AAA. And the change in qualifying, makes sense. If you truly want the fastest cars in, then put the fastest cars in, not just the ones that show up every week.
But this points thing, I can't wrap my head around. Kind of like that awful sound Peter Brady makes in the song, is it really necessary?
