What is the Heisman Trophy?
The Heisman Trophy is awarded each year to the most outstanding player in college football. It is the most celebrated and sought-after award in American collegiate athletics.
Originally known as the Downtown Athletic Club trophy, it has been awarded every year since 1935. It was named after John Heisman after his death from pneumonia in 1936.
Who Was John Heisman?
Born in Cleveland in 1869, John Heisman was responsible for many firsts in football. He is credited with legalizing the foward pass in 1906, the center snap and the "hike" count.
A player himself in college, Heisman coached at several schools between 1892 and 1927 including Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech and the University of Pennsylvania. He retired with 185 wins, 68 losses, and 18 ties.
On May 23, 1930, John W. Heisman was named the first Athletic Director of the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City. In organized and founded the Touchdown Club of New York, and later the National Football Coaches Association.
The Voting
There are 928 Heisman voters this year. Here's how they break down:
Ballots went out to voters the week of November 11. They have three weeks to decide which three players to select.
The ballots include a space for voters to designate three individuals for the Heisman Trophy. The first choice on an elector's ballot receives three points in the overall voting tabulation, the second choice receives two points and the third choice receives one point.
Ballots are void unless signed. A first, second and third choice must be indicated on each ballot. The Heisman Committee created the point system in an effort to eliminate any sectional favoritism.
In 1968, the Heisman Trophy Committee voted to award two trophies each year - one to the winner, the other to the winner's school.
