Wichita State is now the 2nd ranked team in the country according to the Associated Press poll. The 29-0 Shockers sit behind top-ranked Florida who owns a 25-2 record.
Wichita State received 14 first-place votes in this week's poll while Florida received 47.
The rest of the top 5 are #3 Arizona, #4 Syracuse and #5 Kansas.
Billy Donovan, Florida's head coach, says Wichita State has a case for being #1 considering they're still undefeated. Kansas head coach Bill Self said in his teleconference on Monday that "Wichita State is good enough to win it all, no question."
The last time that an undefeated team was not ranked #1 this late in the season was the year 1979. Larry Bird's Indiana State team was 26-0 but they were ranked behind Notre Dame. Bird's Sycamores went on to be national runners-up to Magic Johnson's Michigan State Spartans. The '79 Sycamores finished with a 33-1 record.
Wichita State is also #2 in the coaches poll and the Shockers are receiving 8 first place votes in that poll. Florida is the #1 team according to the coaches with Arizona at 3, Louisville at 4, Syracuse at 5 and Kansas at 6.
