The first base position for the Wichita Wingnuts this season has been a constant rotation of different bodies, some even playing at the corner for the first time in their career. Hoping to remedy the situation and bring some stability to the spot, the Wingnuts have traded for Trevor Whyte of the Brownsville Charros in exchange for a player to be named later. In addition, J.T. Wise was chosen as the American Association Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week that ended on June 23.
Whyte, who is 24 years old, began the 2014 season in the United League, hitting .330 in 28 games for the Charros. He had hit a pair of home runs and driven in 21 while also drawing 11 bases on balls.
In his two previous seasons of professional baseball, the native of Mission Viejo, California, spent time with four different clubs in both the United and Frontier Leagues. In his rookie season of 2011, he began with the Las Cruces Vaqueros where he was a large power threat. In 66 games he hit .321 with 12 home runs and 62 runs batted in. In August he moved to the Rockford RiverHawks of the Frontier League for the final 20 games of the season.
The following year, he was part of the 2013 UNLB Champion Edinburg Roadrunners. He finished the season with 23 RBI and a .327 batting average. He then joined the Southern Illinois Miners for the conclusion of the Frontier League campaign, playing in 11 games.
Whyte began his college career with two seasons at Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, California. His sophomore season he hit .325 with six home runs and 39 RBI and was named First-Team All-Orange Empire Conference. He transferred to the University of California-Santa Barbara for his final two seasons. He put together a solid junior season, hitting .304 and leading the Gauchos in doubles.
He has played all 138 games of his career at first base with a fielding percentage of .992 and 10 errors. He fills the roster spot vacated when the Wingnuts released Miguel Mendez.
Meanwhile J.T. Wise became the first Wingnut of the season to receive an honor from the league. Wise was named the American Association’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending on June 23.
Wise recorded hits in all six games he played in for the Wingnuts this week. He went 10-for-26 in games against the Laredo Lemurs and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. In three weekend games with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Wise came alive in a big way. In Friday’s series opener, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs, helping Wichita to a 5-1 win. Saturday, Wise was 2-for-4 in an 8-7 win, adding another solo home run and RBI. The DH closed out his hot series with two more home runs on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI.
