Wichita State won 11-1 against Southern Illinois on Sunday inside Eck Stadium to complete a series sweep. The game was called after the top of the seventh inning due to run rule.
Sam Tewes picked up the win and is now 6-2 on the year. Aaron Hauge took the loss and dropped to 3-3. Tewes pitched six innings and gave up one run (unearned) on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Hauge pitched three innings and gave up five runs on six hits while striking out two.
Daniel Kihle and Casey Gillaspie led the way for the Shockers. Kihle went 3-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI while Gillaspie went 3-4 with two RBI of his own. Matt Jones was 2-2 to lead Southern Illinois.
The Salukis took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jake Welch tripled, scoring Connor Kopach from first base after a throwing error by Tanner Kirk.
Wichita State answered with two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Micah Green doubled to left center with two outs in the inning, scoring Chase Simpson from second base and Dayne Parker from first base.
In the bottom of the third, the Shockers scored three to push their lead to 5-1. Gillaspie drove in Kihle from second base and during the next at-bat, Simpson plated Gillaspie after Gillaspie stole second base. Zair Koeiman singled to SIU shortstop Jake Welch, scoring Green from third base.
Wichita State added a run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-1 over Southern Illinois after Kihle hit a solo home run, his third of the season.
During the bottom of the fifth, the Shockers scored five more runs to take an 11-1 lead. Baker hit a 2-RBI triple that scored Koeiman and Bayliff. Kihle singled to right, knocking in Baker and a Parker groundout scored Kirk.
Gillaspie capped off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth by singling to center, scoring Kihle.
The Shockers’ next game is on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. when they take on the Missouri Tigers at 7:05 p.m.
