A strong late season winter storm is moving out of the Rockies into the Plains this weekend, and will produce a wet and for some a white weekend. Locally heavy rainfall will be the concern for central and eastern Kansas, while heavy snow and near white-out conditions are possible across western Kansas today through Sunday evening.

A Weather Alert Day has been issued for western Kansas as snow could have a "high" impact on travel and could lead to downed power lines and trees. The snow will be wet and heavy at times, especially tonight through Sunday morning. Accumulations of 6-12 inches are possible across far western Kansas with the heaviest snow expected northwest of Dodge City (near Scott City, Tribune). Blowing and drifting snow may become an issue overnight into the early morning hours Sunday. Winter Storm Warnings are in place across western Kansas from 7 P.M. until 7 P.M. Sunday.

Rain with embedded thunderstorms will dominate central and eastern Kansas with locally heavy rainfall possible through the weekend. No severe weather is expected, however localized flooding may become an increasing concern tonight and Sunday morning. Rainfall amounts of 1-3" will be common, while isolated amounts of 4-5" are possible across southeast Kansas. Expect chilly temperatures and gusty northerly winds today through Sunday. Wind gusts of 25-35 m.p.h., are possible, producing a very raw and chilly weekend. Highs will only reach the 30s and 40s each afternoon. Rain and snow should taper off Sunday evening with decreasing clouds Sunday night.

The sun returns on Monday with highs in the 50s and 60s. Another chance of rain and storms arrives on Tuesday night and Wednesday with drier and warmer weather expected Thursday into next weekend.
