Sisters Trista and Katelynn Tammen spent another day off school Friday, making use of the leftover white stuff. With more than a foot on the ground, they thought for sure they could make a snowman. Trista says, "It didn't go off so well. Say you have this big bottom for the snowman and if you try patting it down, it's not going to work. It's just going to fall off."
Chandler Kitchen wanted to make a few bucks on his day off, so he shoveled driveways. Chandler says, "It makes you feel good that you're doing something for people." That seems to be the spirit of most people in Russell. The girls' mom Vickie Tammen says, "We're just trying to clean off roads and get the driveways so everybody can at least enjoy the weather while we've got it."
The folks of Russell have not seen this much snow in many years. They say a cleanup this big takes teamwork. Russell resident David Reisig says, "My neighbor has a snow blower, she cleans off all the sidewalks. I've got one more drive here to get out of the way. Then I'll go over to another friend of mine and clean his off."
Down the road, Laverne Dietz cleaned Ken Krannawitter's drive. He says it is just something to do. Laverne says, "My wife has an aunt that I'm going to go do. Then I'll check on another friend and see how he's doing." Ken says, "He saved my back, no doubt about it. I really appreciate it."
As the cleanup continues, the pileups grow even bigger. Ken says, "I am going to let Mother Nature take care of the rest of this."
