Wind Surge to become Double-A affiliate of Minnesota Twins
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Wind Surge has been invited by the Minnesota Twins to become its Double-A affiliate. Previously, the Wind Surge was the triple-A affiliate with the Miami Marlins but never played a game due to the pandemic. Wednesday’s announcement confirms rumors that have circulated for weeks.
Wichita Wind Surge Vice President and General Manager Jared Forma said the team looks forward to being part of the Twins family for the next 10-plus years. He said the affiliate change won’t change the team’s name.
Over the last year, there’s been news of Minor League Baseball downsizing across the country and in its place, Major League Baseball organizations are taking over. Forma said the team still has to finalize the partnership, a process that could take another week or two.
Overall, Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said the change will be good for the city.
“When you put it together, we have the direct flight to Minnesota, (and) some of our businesses here have headquarters in Minnesota,” he said. “I think it helps us economically for sure.”
Local fans who spoke with Eyewitness News Wednesday said they’re looking forward to watching games at the city’s new stadium after the inaugural Wind Surge season was canceled this past spring due to COVID-19.
