Wichita Police Department warns of officer-impersonation scam
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Police Department issued a warning of a phone impersonation scam in which scammers claim to be officers with the department. It’s an old scam that is recirculating.
On Thursday (Dec. 31), the WPD investigated a case where an unknown suspect claiming to be a WPD sergeant called a woman, requesting money and a signature for a missed court date.
“When calling the number back, a recording is reached claiming to be the desk phone of the sergeant,” the WPD warned. “Please know that WPD department members will never call anyone on behalf of any federal, state, or local courts. In addition, department members will never call requesting money or gift cards, and these types of calls are scams.”
If you have questions about the legitimacy of a call claiming to be from the Wichita Police Department, the WPD advised that you hang up on the caller and then call City Hall at 316-268-4111 to verify the call’s legitimacy. The number for City Hall is answered at all times. The WPD also provided a list of valid department numbers that are answered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Those numbers include:
- WPD Investigations – 316-268-4407
- Patrol North Police Station – 316-350-3400
- Patrol South Police Station – 316-350-3440
